Mothers Against Drunk Driving

Mothers Against Drunk Driving is a non-profit organization with a four-part mission to end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, serve the victims of these violent crimes, and prevent underage drinking. MADD’s vision is No More Victims. Victim Services Specialists provide direct services to victims and survivors of impaired driving crashes whenever they are needed. Program Specialists host a court-mandated DUI offender class known as the Victim Impact Panel, do court monitoring online and in the courtroom, present in middle schools and high schools, and educate the public through various events. The Southern Arizona Office takes part in numerous community events and fairs throughout the year to support MADD’s mission. In the Spring, this office hosts a candlelight vigil in April and participates in PowerTalk 21 as well. In the fall, this office hosts an Honoring Heroes Recognition Dinner, a Walk Like MADD 5k , and a candlelight vigil in December, in addition to participating in Red Ribbon Week.

The internship will encompass all duties at MADD.

  • Data entry in Excel and Word
  • Data mining and management
  • Court monitoring online and in the courts
  • Shadowing of Victim Services Specialists at intakes, in court, at support groups, at events, etc.
  • Shadowing of various staff during outreach meetings with community coalitions and partners, law enforcement, court personnel, victims and volunteers, and existing or potential sponsors
  • Participating in underage drinking prevention events and presentations
  • Planning and taking part in MADD events throughout the semester
  • Shadowing program specialists at Victim Impact Panels

Purpose of Internship

Purpose of the Internship: To expose the intern to duties performed by all staff at the MADD office. The intern will learn:

  • How to interact with victims and survivors
    • Intake, support group, court hearings, etc.
    • *When appropriate and permitted*
  • How DUI cases move through the criminal justice system
    • With and without a victim listed in the case
  • How DUI cases are prosecuted
    • Plea deals vs. trial
    • Felonies vs. misdemeanors
  • The lasting, life-long impact of drunk and drugged driving and the effects of underage drinking
  • What Arizona Victims’ Rights are and how they apply to DUI cases
  • Best practices for networking with community partners
  • Best practices for public speaking and community education
  • Best practices for communicating professionally via written and spoken communication
