Earn to Learn seeks to help more Arizona students pursue postsecondary education. Currently enrolled college students and recent bachelor’s degree recipients will serve as a Next Steps Advisor in selected Middle and high schools across Arizona that seek to enhance their college-going culture and career readiness. Serving alongside high school counselors and other school professionals, advisors will support students as they make the transition from high school to a post-secondary educational institution, certificate programs/ trade schools, or the workforce.

Annual compensation will include a living allowance and a post-service education award which 
varies per time slot commitment. Living allowances will vary depending on hours the Applicant committed to and how many pay cycles between when an Applicant starts and their end date. (Ex: An Advisor who starts commits to 675 hours and starts in September and will serve 22 pay periods will receive a bi-weekly living allowance of $547.72 per pay period.)

The Next Steps Program is funded by AmeriCorps. Advisors serve part-time and focus on supporting students, especially those from low-income backgrounds, through the complex steps of college enrollment. Advisors will provide students with relevant information regarding the benefits of a post-secondary education, preparing for college attendance, and the admission and financial aid processes.

Purpose of the Internship

Successful advisors/interns are fully enmeshed in the fabric of the local high school communities.

  • Interns will gain leadership skills as they guide and mentor high school students pursuing post-secondary education.
  • Interns will gain a deep understanding of the educational challenges and inequalities present in the Tucson community.
  • Interns will learn about the current college access efforts on the state of Arizona and community partners supporting these efforts.

Agency Qualifications (minimum)

  • Current student at University of Arizona
  • Available to serve in a local high school or college access program a minimum of 2-3 days/week in total (15-20 hours a week). 
  • Dependable transportation to and from your service site.

  • Ability to effectively partner with students, faculty, and staff, including those from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership abilities, influencing others in a positive manner while achieving goals, and effectively communicating ideas and generating support for ideas.
  • Ability to serve independently and analytically, exercise discretion and good judgment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • High energy, creativity, ability to assume responsibility.
  • Take initiative and develop innovative programs within the high school setting.

Applicants must obtain an IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card and pass Federal and State background screenings. IVP Card not necessary to apply but must successfully apply and obtain prior to starting as a Next Steps Advisor. Applicants must provide documentation of eligibility for service (e.g., birth certificate, passport, transcripts).
