Broadly, his research lies at the intersection of international organizations, international security, peace and conflict processes, democratization, and statebuilding. More specifically, his research examines the short- and long-term role that the international community plays in countries' political (post-conflict and post-authoritarian) transitions, with a particular focus on Eastern Europe. Recent work of his examines the determinants of social and political trust in these contexts. His research has been published in the <em>American Journal of Political Science</em>, <em>International Studies Quarterly</em>, and <em>Small Wars &amp; Insurgencies. </em>He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 2023.&nbsp;</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div class="elementToProof">Originally from Northern Minnesota, Cameron enjoys spending his time outside hiking and skiing. Burgoyne is a retired U.S. Army Colonel and joins the School of Government and Public Policy. He deployed twice to Iraq in command and staff positions and served as the defense attaché in Kabul, Afghanistan. He was a counterinsurgency trainer at the National Training Center and co-authored The Defense of Jisr al-Doreaa, a tactical primer on counterinsurgency. He served in various policy and security cooperation positions in the Americas, including assignments as the Army attaché in Mexico, Andean Ridge desk officer at U.S. Army South, senior defense official in Guatemala, and policy analyst at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.</p> <p>Burgoyne holds an M.A. in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College and an M.A. in security studies from Georgetown University. His research and writing focus on security in the Western Hemisphere, insurgency, transnational organized crime, alliances, and defense policy. She also has a faculty appointment as professor in the&nbsp;<a href="/" target="_blank">School of Government and Public Policy</a>. Previously, she was Interim Dean in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, associate dean for research, personnel, and graduate programs and chair of the&nbsp;Department of Politics and International Affairs&nbsp;at Northern Arizona University. Poloni-Staudinger has actively promoted student success, faculty governance, community engagement, international education, and diversity in the academy.</p> <p>The author of five books and over thirty articles, chapters and reports, Poloni-Staudinger’s research and publications focus mainly on social movements and extra institutional political participation in Europe and the United States. Over time, her work has moved from focusing on environmental movements to a focus on women’s movements. Her recent work examines questions around women and political violence as well as women and politics more generally. Her expertise has led to publications in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/01/22/can-woman-win-presidency-even-asking-question-discourages-women-running/" target="_blank">Washington Post</a>&nbsp;and other popular media outlets.</p> <p>Poloni-Staudinger has worked to increase citizen participation in politics, facilitating dozens of community forums throughout the state of Arizona. Her civic engagement work led to the development of Arizona Deliberates, a cooperative, grant-funded project between Maricopa Community College District, NAU, and nonprofits. She has also served as the Women’s Caucus president for the Midwest Political Science Association.</p> <p>Poloni-Staudinger has been a Distinguished Fulbright Fellow at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna, Austria, a Kettering Foundation Fellow, and a consultant for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. She attended&nbsp;Harvard’s Management Development Program, which provided training and insight into higher education leadership and operations.</p> <p>Poloni-Staudinger received her Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Biology with a minor in French from&nbsp;Colorado State University. She also received an MA in political science with a concentration in environmental politics from Colorado State. He received his PhD in 2021 from Emory University.&nbsp;</p> <p>Dr. Arnon’s research focuses on conflict processes between individuals and the state, including individual violence against the state, namely terrorism and insurgency, and state violence against individuals, namely human rights violations and repression.&nbsp; His recent research focuses on the sources of lone actor political violence and its political consequences, the politicization of and biases in measuring human rights violations, how identity politics shapes tolerance for repression, and the dynamics of social cohesion and state repression, particularly in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. His work has appeared in the <em>British Journal of Political Science</em>, <em>International Security</em>, the <em>Journal of Conflict Resolution</em>, the <em>Journal of Human Rights</em>, and <em>Conflict Management and Peace Science</em>. In addition to his PhD from Emory University, Dr. Arnon also holds a M.Sc. She holds a joint appointment in the School of Government &amp; Public Policy. Her research analyzes the micro dynamics of conflict and peacebuilding and organized resistance to militarized drug policies with a focus on Latin America.&nbsp;She approaches these topics using a broad range of qualitative methods including intensive field work, direct observation, and interviews.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>Dr. Brewer-Osorio’s current project on reintegration of former combatants of rebel groups analyzes Colombia’s innovative collective approach and impacts on grassroots peacebuilding. She is also involved in a collaborative research project on gender and ex-combatant reintegration with researchers at the Universidad EAFIT in Medellín, Colombia, and she directs the Security and Peacebuilding in Colombia study abroad program for the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS).&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>She is a 2023-24 Fellow of the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy and a 2021 U.S. Fulbright Scholar (Colombia). She is also the recipient of a Peace Research Grant from the Peace Research Association Foundation (IPRAF) and a 2011 Fellow of the Drugs, Security, and Democracy (DSD) program with the Social Science Research Council (SSRC). Volgy was born in Budapest, Hungary. His parents escaped during the Hungarian revolution and emigrated to the United States. He received his BA from Oakland University, and his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota in Political Science. He moved to Tucson to take a position at the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.arizona.edu/" target="_blank">University of Arizona</a>, where he is a professor of political science, specializing in international politics, democratic processes, and domestic public policy. He is served for twenty years as the executive director of the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.isanet.org/" target="_blank">International Studies Association</a>, the largest association of its kind focusing on international politics, with a membership of over 7,000 scholars from 110 countries. He is also co-owner of a firm, called Magellan International, LLC., which does business both in the United States and overseas, involving business consultation, political consultation, and international trade. He served in public office from 1977 through 1991 as a member of the Tucson city council, and then as Mayor of Tucson.</p> <p>He has published over sixty articles in professional journals, and is the author and/or co-author of several books, including&nbsp;<em>Shocks and Political Change: A Comparative Perspective on Foreign Policy Analysis</em>&nbsp;(2023),&nbsp;<em>Turmoil and Order in Regional International Politics</em>&nbsp;(2023),<em>&nbsp;Regions, Power and Conflict: Constrained Capabilities, Hierarchy, and Rivalry</em>&nbsp;(2022),&nbsp;<em>Major Powers and the Quest for Status in International Politics</em>&nbsp;(2011),&nbsp;<em>Mapping the New World Order</em>&nbsp;(2009),&nbsp;<em>International Politics and State Strength&nbsp;</em>(2003<em>), Politics in the Trenches: Citizens, Politicians and the Fate of Democracy</em>&nbsp;(2001),&nbsp;<em>The Forgotten Americans: Working Hard and Living Poor in the Land of Opportunity&nbsp;</em>(1992).&nbsp;</p> <p>He has also been honored by the University of Arizona with awards for teaching and distinguished public service.</p> <p>Volgy ran successfully for local office, both on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tucsonaz.gov/" target="_blank">Tucson City Council</a>&nbsp;and as Mayor of Tucson, and served for fourteen years in elected office. During that time, he accepted as well a national leadership role with the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the National League of Cities, and was invited on numerous occasions to testify before the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, and the National Governors Council on key urban public policy issues facing the nation. He has served as a delegate to two national Democratic conventions, including his role on the DNC’s rules committee.</p> <p>After leaving public office, Volgy has been actively involved through the U.S. government with the training of government officials overseas in the areas of democratic political development and public policy. He has conducted such training in Kazakstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Ukraine, Estonia, Hungary, Romania, and Guyana. In addition, he was part of the international team that monitored Hungary’s first democratic elections in the post-Cold War environment. He also served as a member of the U.S. State Department delegation to the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.osce.org/" target="_blank">Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe</a>&nbsp;conference in Prague, and has lectured on international politics and transatlantic relations for the State Department in Europe.</p> <p>After leaving office, Volgy has been active as well in the private sector. He is co-owner of Magellan International, a firm providing consulting services and assistance domestically and internationally. She is particularly interested in how civilians are affected by conflict, whether as victims of violence or agents of change. She teaches courses at the undergraduate and master’s level on terrorism, strategic nonviolent conflict, human security, and statistics. She also serves as the Assistant Director of the International Security Studies program. Her work has been published in the Journal of Peace Research, Conflict Management and Peace Science, and the Journal of Global Security Studies. His research analyzes the micro-foundations and dynamics of political and criminal violence with particular focus in Latin America.&nbsp;To address this agenda, Dr. Osorio uses a broad range of quantitative methods including natural language processing, quasi-experimental and experimental techniques, geographic information systems, and big data analytics.</p> <p>Dr. Osorio is currently involved in collaborative research projects focused on supervised event coding on conflict with the support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Defense – Minerva Initiative. He is also the founder of the Academy for Security Analysis, a project devoted to providing training and implementing randomized controlled trials on security in Central America with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).</p> <p>In 2015, he received an award from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for the “Best Dissertation” on Public Safety, Victimization, and Justice in Latin American and the Caribbean. In 2017, he received the “Best Paper by an Emerging Scholar” award from the Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA). She also examines the origins of rebellion as a co-creator of the Foundations of Rebel Group Emergence (FORGE) dataset.
