She also has a faculty appointment as professor in the&nbsp;<a href="/" target="_blank">School of Government and Public Policy</a>. Previously, she was Interim Dean in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, associate dean for research, personnel, and graduate programs and chair of the&nbsp;Department of Politics and International Affairs&nbsp;at Northern Arizona University. Poloni-Staudinger has actively promoted student success, faculty governance, community engagement, international education, and diversity in the academy.</p> <p>The author of five books and over thirty articles, chapters and reports, Poloni-Staudinger’s research and publications focus mainly on social movements and extra institutional political participation in Europe and the United States. Over time, her work has moved from focusing on environmental movements to a focus on women’s movements. Her recent work examines questions around women and political violence as well as women and politics more generally. Her expertise has led to publications in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/01/22/can-woman-win-presidency-even-asking-question-discourages-women-running/" target="_blank">Washington Post</a>&nbsp;and other popular media outlets.</p> <p>Poloni-Staudinger has worked to increase citizen participation in politics, facilitating dozens of community forums throughout the state of Arizona. Her civic engagement work led to the development of Arizona Deliberates, a cooperative, grant-funded project between Maricopa Community College District, NAU, and nonprofits. She has also served as the Women’s Caucus president for the Midwest Political Science Association.</p> <p>Poloni-Staudinger has been a Distinguished Fulbright Fellow at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna, Austria, a Kettering Foundation Fellow, and a consultant for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. She attended&nbsp;Harvard’s Management Development Program, which provided training and insight into higher education leadership and operations.</p> <p>Poloni-Staudinger received her Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Biology with a minor in French from&nbsp;Colorado State University. She also received an MA in political science with a concentration in environmental politics from Colorado State. Her work has appeared in&nbsp;<em>Comparative Political Studies</em>,<em>&nbsp;The American Journal of Political Science, Politics &amp; Gender, PS: Political Science and Politics,</em>&nbsp;and<em>&nbsp;Hawwa</em>. Her dissertation (defended at Princeton in 2022) received the Best Dissertation Award from the Middle East and North African Politics Section of APSA in 2023, and an honorary mention for Best Fieldwork from the Democracy &amp; Autocracy Section in 2022. Carolyn has held Fulbright scholarships to Morocco and Egypt and a Marshall Scholarship to the UK. She holds a joint appointment in the School of Government &amp; Public Policy. Her research analyzes the micro dynamics of conflict and peacebuilding and organized resistance to militarized drug policies with a focus on Latin America.&nbsp;She approaches these topics using a broad range of qualitative methods including intensive field work, direct observation, and interviews.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>Dr. Brewer-Osorio’s current project on reintegration of former combatants of rebel groups analyzes Colombia’s innovative collective approach and impacts on grassroots peacebuilding. She is also involved in a collaborative research project on gender and ex-combatant reintegration with researchers at the Universidad EAFIT in Medellín, Colombia, and she directs the Security and Peacebuilding in Colombia study abroad program for the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS).&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>She is a 2023-24 Fellow of the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy and a 2021 U.S. Fulbright Scholar (Colombia). She is also the recipient of a Peace Research Grant from the Peace Research Association Foundation (IPRAF) and a 2011 Fellow of the Drugs, Security, and Democracy (DSD) program with the Social Science Research Council (SSRC). Dr. Brewer-Osorio’s work is published in the </span><em><span>Journal of Latin American Studies</span></em><span>, </span><em><span>Conflict, Security &amp; Development</span></em><span>, </span><em><span>Studies in Conflict &amp; Terrorism</span></em><span>, and the </span><em><span>Latin Americanist</span></em><span>.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>Dr Brewer-Osorio earned her Ph.D. in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia in 2014. His research analyzes the micro-foundations and dynamics of political and criminal violence with particular focus in Latin America.&nbsp;To address this agenda, Dr. Osorio uses a broad range of quantitative methods including natural language processing, quasi-experimental and experimental techniques, geographic information systems, and big data analytics.</p> <p>Dr. Osorio is currently involved in collaborative research projects focused on supervised event coding on conflict with the support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Defense – Minerva Initiative. He is also the founder of the Academy for Security Analysis, a project devoted to providing training and implementing randomized controlled trials on security in Central America with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).</p> <p>In 2015, he received an award from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for the “Best Dissertation” on Public Safety, Victimization, and Justice in Latin American and the Caribbean. In 2017, he received the “Best Paper by an Emerging Scholar” award from the Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA). Mishler received his BA at Stetson University and his PhD from Duke University. Before moving to Arizona in 1997, he held tenured positions at Duke University, SUNY Buffalo, and as the James F. and Maude B. Byrnes Professor of Government at the University of South Carolina. He has twice served as Director of the Political Science Program at the U.S. National Science Foundation and for three years as Senior Research Scientist and Democracy Fellow in the Center for Democracy, Human Rights and Governance at the United States Agency for International Development. A specialist in democratic theory, he teaches and writes on public opinion, political representation, and the dynamics of citizen support for democratic parties, leaders and regimes. Recently he has been writing and consulting on problems of Human Trafficking. Mishler is the author or co-author of eight books, the most recent of which is Popular Support for an Undemocratic Regime: the Changing Views of Russians (Cambridge University Press, 2011). He also is the author of numerous articles and chapters in most of the leading Political Science journals including the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, The Journal of Politics, British Journal of Political Science, Comparative Politics, Comparative Political Studies, and Legislative Studies Quarterly. In addition to his scholarly work, Mishler has consulted extensively on Conflict Management, Democratization, and Public Opinion for the United States Agency for International Development and a variety of non-governmental organizations including the Academy for Educational Development, ARD Inc., FHI 360, IIE, Management Systems International, the National Democratic Institute, NORC and Social Impact.
