Dmitriy is an assistant professor of government in the College of Applied Science and Technology at the University of Arizona. His research focuses on international conflict processes and the foreign relations between the United States and the aspiring global powers, especially China and Russia. Before joining the faculty at the University of Arizona, Dmitriy held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Fletcher School at Tufts University and a predoctoral fellowship at the Davis Center at Harvard University.

Dr. Martínez holds the title of Distinguished Scholar & Associate Professor in the School of Sociology. He also serves as a co-director of the Binational Migration Institute and is a core faculty member in the Mexican American Studies Department. Dr. Martínez’s research and teaching interests include race and ethnicity, undocumented immigration, and criminology. He is particularly interested in the social and legal criminalization of immigration.

Dr. Martínez has conducted extensive research on deportation and undocumented border crosser deaths along the US-Mexico border. He is a principal investigator of the Migrant Border Crossing Study, a Ford Foundation-funded research project that examines recently deported undocumented migrants’ experiences crossing the US-Mexico border and residing in the United States. He edited In the Shadow of the Wall: Violence and Migration on the U.S. Mexico Border, which was released in 2018 by the University of Arizona Press.

His current research focuses on 1) Latino/a panethnicity, 2) the relationship between so-called “sanctuary” policies and public safety, 3) migrant deaths, and 4) the ecological correlates of officer-involved shootings and violent crime in southwestern cities.

Dr. Martínez is an affiliate of the School of Government and Public Policy, the School of Geography, Development, & Environment, the Center for Latin American Studies, and the SBS Human Rights Practice Program. He currently serves on the editorial boards of the American Sociological Review and the Journal on Migration and Human Security.

Jeannine Relly is Professor in the School of Journalism at The University of Arizona. She holds a courtesy appointment with the School of Government and Public Policy. Dr. Relly is an affiliated faculty member with the Center for Latin American Studies, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and the Center for Border and Global Journalism. Her research focuses on government information policy and press-state relations, democratic institutions, freedom of expression and access to information in countries in conflict and political transition. She also has a line of research focused on formal and informal institutions related to the policy issue of public corruption.

Sharon B. Megdal, Ph.D. is Director of The University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center (WRRC), a Cooperative Extension center and a research unit in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Other primary titles are Professor and Specialist in the Department of Environmental Science, C.W. & Modene Neely Endowed Professor, and Distinguished Outreach Professor.

Sharon Megdal aims to bridge the academic, practitioner, and civil society communities through water policy and management research, education, and engagement programs. The geographic scope of Dr. Megdal’s work ranges from local to international. Applied research projects include analysis of water management, policy, and governance in water-scarce regions, groundwater recharge, and transboundary aquifer assessment. Key engagement initiatives are Indigenous Water Dialogues and Diversifying Voices in Water Resources.

She is the lead editor of the book, Shared Borders, Shared Waters: Israeli-Palestinian and Colorado River Basin Water Challenges and she has guest edited several special journal issues. Dr. Megdal teaches the multidisciplinary graduate course “Water Policy in Arizona and Semi-arid Regions”. In 2020, she was awarded the Warren A. Hall Medal for lifetime achievement in water resources research and education by the Universities Council on Water Resources.

Sharon Megdal serves as on the Board of the American Water Resources Association and is an ex officio member of the Leadership Team for the Colorado River Basin Water & Tribes Initiative. Recent professional service includes serving for 12 years as a popularly elected Director for the Central Arizona Water Conservation District, also known as the Central Arizona Project (CAP), and Board President for the International Arid Lands Consortium. Dr. Megdal has served on numerous Arizona boards and commissions, including the Arizona Corporation Commission, the State Transportation Board, and the Arizona Medical Board. She holds a Ph.D. degree in Economics from Princeton University.

Kate Kenski (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania) is Professor of Communication and Government & Public Policy at the University of Arizona where she teaches political communication, public opinion, and research methods. She is a former editor of the International Journal for Public Opinion Research and is currently an associate editor of Public Opinion Quarterly. She has served as Chair of NCA’s Political Communication Division (2011) and as Secretary/Treasurer of APSA’s Political Communication Section (2010-present). Her book The Obama Victory: How Media, Money, and Message Shaped the 2008 Election (co-authored with Bruce W. Hardy and Kathleen Hall Jamieson; 2010, Oxford University Press) has won several awards including the 2011 ICA Outstanding Book Award, the 2012 NCA Diamond Anniversary Book Award, the 2012 NCA Political Communication Division Roderick P. Hart Outstanding Book Award, and The PROSE Award for 2010 Best Book in Government and Politics. Kenski is also co-author of the book Capturing Campaign Dynamics: The National Annenberg Election Survey (2004, Oxford University Press). She has published research in journals such as the American Behavioral Scientist, Communication Research, the International Journal of Public Opinion Research, the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, Presidential Studies Quarterly, and Public Opinion Quarterly. Her current research focuses on incivility in online forums and multimedia teaching strategies to mitigate cognitive biases.

Carl Bauer is a Professor in the School of Geography, Development, and Environment at the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ, where he teaches and does research in the fields of comparative and international water law and policy. His approach is interdisciplinary and combines law, geography, and political economy. Bauer was a researcher at Resources for the Future in Washington, DC, and he has consulted for the United Nations, World Bank, Interamerican Development Bank, Global Water Partnership, etc. Bauer has worked in Chile for 30 years, studying the Chilean model of water markets and governance. He has a Ph.D. in Jurisprudence and Social Policy, University of California-Berkeley Law School; M.S. in Geography, University of Wisconsin-Madison; and B.A. in Geology, Yale College.

My interests focus on justice and ethical decision-making in society. In the later 70s and early 80s I was a law enforcement officer, in various capacities, in Wisconsin. While working I completed my Bachelors degree at Lakeland College and proceeded to the University of Wisconsin Madison to receive a Masters and Ph.D. in Sociology with concentrations in criminology, law and statistics. At the University of Arizona I have taught courses ranging from General Education to Ph.D. seminars. My research has ranged from life-course studies of deviance to the implementation and evaluation of drug courts to correctional theories and policy. I am currently the Director of the Rombach Institute of Delinquency, Crime and Corrections.

V. Spike Peterson is a Professor Emeritus of International Relations in the School of Government and Public Policy, with courtesy appointments in the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies, Institute for LGBT Studies, and Center for Latin American Studies. She was recently awarded a Richard Hodder-Williams Fellowship by the School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies at the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, where she resided for several months in Spring 2018. She was also honored to receive the 2018 LGBTQA Scholar Award by the LGBTQA Caucus of the International Studies Association, which recognizes her long-standing and pioneering research in queer approaches to IR and IPE. In 2016 she received the Charles A. McCoy Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Political Science Association. Peterson was earlier awarded a Leverhulme Visiting Professorship and was hosted by the Critical Global Politics unit at the University of Manchester, UK during the Fall 2016 term. During the spring of 2014 she was a Senior Research Fellow hosted by the Department of Geography at Durham University, England, and during 2008-2011 was an Associate Research Fellow of the London School of Economics. Her book publications include Global Gender Issues in the New Millennium (2010) and two earlier editions of Global Gender Issues (1999, 1993) with Anne Sisson Runyan; her own A Critical Rewriting of Global Political Economy: Integrating Reproductive, Productive and Virtual Economies (2003); and Gendered States: Feminist (Re)Visions of International Relations Theory (1992), which she contributed to and edited. She has published more than 100 journal articles and book chapters, most recently on informalizations of work in relation to structural inequalities and their corollary insecurities worldwide; global householding; gendering war and its economies; and critical queering of marriage, citizenship, migration and states/nations.

Peterson has been awarded a Rockefeller Bellagio Scholarly Residency (2008), a Udall Center Public Policy Fellowship (2007), a Fulbright Scholarship for research in the Czech Republic (1997, declined) and a MacArthur Foundation Research and Writing Grant (1996). In addition to her residence at the University of Manchester (2016), Peterson has enjoyed Visiting Research Scholar or Professorships at Durham University (2014), the London School of Economics (2007, 2008), University of Göteborg (2000), University of Bristol (1998) and the Australian National University (1995). She has guest lectured at numerous universities in the United States, Canada, Australia and Europe and been an invited speaker at international conferences in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Peterson currently serves on the editorial boards of International Feminist Journal of Politics; Globalizations; Journal of Women, Politics and Policy; New Political Science; Politics & Gender; and Perspectives: The Review of International Affairs. She received the SBS Dean's Award for Excellence in Upper Division Teaching (2014), the Magellan Circle Award for Teaching Excellence (2008) and the Provost’s General Education Teaching Award (2001) at the University of Arizona, as well as the national Mentor Award of the Society for Women in International Political Economy (2000). She regularly teaches undergraduate courses in Politics and Theory that are cross-listed with Gender and Women’s Studies, and graduate seminars on contemporary social theory and global political economy.

Barbara Norrander has been a professor at the University of Arizona since 1990, with a Ph.D. from Ohio State University (1982).  Her teaching and research focus on American politics with specializations in elections, public opinion and political parties.  She is the author of The Imperfect Primary:  Oddities, Biases, and Strengths of U.S. Presidential Nomination Politics, 3rd edition (Routledge, 2020). Recent articles include “Change, Continuity and Partisan Sorting on Moral Issues,” coauthored with Joshua Ridenour and Elizabeth Schmitt, The Forum (2019) and "Open Versus Closed Primaries and the Ideological Composition of Presidential Primary Electorates," coauthored with Jay Wendland, Electoral Studies (2016). Her blog posts on presidential nominations and Arizona politics appear on the London School of Economics US Centre Blog and The Monkey Cage.

Professor Norrander teaches Introduction to American National Government (POL 201), Political Parties (POL 331), Elections and Voting Behavior (POL 435), and seminars in the graduate program.  She was president of the Western Political Science Association and has been a member of the executive board for the Midwest Political Science Association and the editorial boards of the American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics and State Politics and Policy Quarterly.
